Sunday, March 8, is International Women’s Day, also called International Working Women’s Day. In fact, it is held on the 8th of March every year. The focal point of Women’s Day is the movement for women’s rights, and it is designed to create awareness for gender inequality and to promote a better working world for women. By sending the women that helped shape your life beautiful flowers, it is globally celebrated to honor them.
The history of Women’s Day goes all the way back to 1908 when the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day in New York City. After 1908, this special day started expanding to other countries: first to Denmark, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and later to Russia, where it was named an official national holiday in 1917. At that moment, March 8 was established as the official day when this national holiday would be celebrated.
Women’s Day was not celebrated much in the USA in the early stages, but that changed in 2011 when President Obama declared March to be “Women’s History Month”. Festivities for International Women’s Day took place in more than 100 countries that year and Women’s Day seemed to be cemented into the American society at that moment.
For many years, the South American Rose growers have been sending a lot of flowers to Russia for Women’s Day and it appears that especially red Roses remain a true favorite to give to women in Russia.
It is interesting to note that Russia doesn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day, and in fact “their” Women’s Day is much more popular than “our” Valentine’s Day. It is therefore very challenging for South American Rose growers to schedule their crops accordingly, so they have enough production for both holidays because Valentine’s Day (February 14) and International Women’s Day (March 8) are so close together.
If you are looking for a perfect way to honor someone special on Women’s Day, your choices are plentiful. Products like Roses, Lilies, Tulips and other seasonal products can be readily sourced to recognize the inspiring females in your life. Mixed flower arrangements and floral bouquets made up with seasonal products are another ideal way to promote Women’s Day.
We are very much looking forward to seeing how Women’s Day will continue to grow in our society. Honor the women who have motivated and inspired you throughout your life with flowers this International Women’s Day!
